Just wanted to say hi and let you all know about SoCo Hammocks. My name is Chris Buster and I own SoCo (socially conscious) Hammocks. Every aspect of my business aims to be socially conscious, from paying fair wages for manufacturing to giving 20% of all profits to help feed, educate, and empower the poor. I have lived in the Dominican Republic for the last three years and seen the effects of severe poverty firsthand so I started a company that not only makes great quality products, but also aims to make a difference in the lives of the poor. Currently you can get a free hanging kit with the purchase of a SoCo Hammock.
I'm happy to be a member of THF and would love to answer any questions you might have.

Review: Hennessy Hex Rainfly 70D Polyester (2 replies)

Just got my new rainfly/tarp in the mail, here's my initial impressions after stringing it up in my (very small) apartment.

I'll post more updates after I take it into the wild wet yonder next week :D

http://hennessyhammock.com/catalog/products/hex_rainfly_70d_polyester/

This tarp costs $60 + shipping so it's pretty inexpensive as hex tarps go, about the same price as a Kelty Noah's 9, except it's hex instead of square for more coverage. My order was filled and shipped quickly, and my questions via email were answered within 2-3 days.

I also ordered a set of the silnylon Snakeskin XL (#4) for packing the tarp.
Note that the tarp unfortunately does not come with any side panel pulls for more interior space or wet tarp droop compensation.

First impression: this is a BIG tarp. It's 12 feet (144", 3.6m) along the ridgeline, and 5 feet on each side of the ridgeline (120" total). Since I'm using it for motorcycle hammock camping to start with, I wanted maximum rain protection for my hammock, gear, cooking area etc. For it's size (and being poly, not silnylon), it seems pretty light to me. I don't have a scale, it has a claimed weight of 23 oz / 650 g.

Galiano Island, BC! But, the tarp is marked "Made in China".

The tarp has 6 tie-out points at each point of the hex. The single seam runs along the ridgeline and is factory sealed with clear iron-on tape from the back, so that's one less thing to do. There is a triangular ring on the two endpoints of the ridgeline, and the other 4 points have both a plastic ring and a plastic snap through the fabric loop.

The tarp comes with some cheap cord, about 9 feet (3m) attached to each point. It's black, which isn't a great choice for guy line color, I was replacing it anyway but it would have been nice if it was a colour that wasn't so easy to trip over at night or lose in the grass.

My tarp is not symmetrical, as you can see from the photo above.

Update: I talked to Hennessy and the tarp is cut asymmetrically on purpose, to go with their asym hammocks.
The tarp is big enough that it shouldn't really make any difference to me.

The tarp has pockets for your guy lines behind each tie-out point which is a nice feature

Here's my suspension: the tarp is on a continuous ridgeline made of 3mm Marlow Excel pro (poly core, poly sheath, 439 lbs avg breaking load, cheap) from a marine supply. At one end is a Nite Ize Knotbone (not pictured), and at the other end is a Nite Ize Figure 9 on a prusik loop.

Between the line's attachments points are two more prusik loops (thanks to member Law Dawg for the idea) with two small S-biners that attach to the tarp's ridgeline rings so you can easily adjust the position of the tarp on the line.

In between is one half of the Hennessy Snakeskins bags for quick setup and tear-down.

And here is my tie-out system. A loop of 1/8" shock cord formed into a loop with a fisherman's bend, then attached to the tarp ring with a lark's head. The green line came with my Figure 9's, it's green with reflective strip sewn in. At one end, I tied a bowline and attached it to the shock cord loop with another lark's head. At the other end, is an adjustable grip hitch loop that goes around the ground stake, described here:

http://www.layhands.com/knots/Knots_Hitches.htm#AdjustableGripHitch

This tarp just barely fits in the silnylon Snakeskin XL (#4) that I ordered with it. My first couple attempts to get it into the skins didn't go very well, until I watched this video. I recommend the method of pre-rolling the lines into the tarp before sliding the skins over, as described here:

Here's the final result, with a Leatherman Squirt for scale. It's still got quite a bit of trapped air, I will probably put it in a plastic shopping bag and roll it to compress. Of course you should take any opportunity to dry out the tarp if it's wet, don't leave it stored like this unless it's dry.

I don't have a scale, but it seems pretty lightweight for the price and size.

I'll post about how it performs over the coming weeks.

Dangerous to add things up, I know :D

I've been trying to get the best bang for my buck, here's what I've spent so far.
(including shipping - I spent extra for Express mail on the hammock)

Warbonnet Blackbird double 1.1 $234.00 ($50 express ship)
Hennessy Hex Rainfly Poly & Snakeskins XL $104.49 ($15 shipping)
1/2" x 27" x 74" CCF foam pad $17.91 (instead of bottom quilt)
6x Caughlan's "ground hog" type Y-pegs $5.98
30ft 3mm Marlow Excel pro poly cord $10.42 (for tarp ridgeline)
4x Figure 9s & 8x Knotbones $24.62 (way more than I need)
Misc mini carabiners and S-biners $11.20
2m 1/8" shock cord & 5m 3mm static cord $4.54 (for tarp tie-outs)

Total: $413.16

Using existing sleeping bag as top quilt

Yikes! Not much of a cost savings against a good tent - but hopefully a lot better.

Went on a bit of a shopping spree :D

Got 30 feet of 3mm Marlow Excel pro, it's just poly cover over poly strand core, but it's rated pretty high and it was cheap
(and available locally! at Steveston Marine Supply @ Granville & 5th in Vancouver if anyone is looking)

Found the Nite Ize Knotbones and Figure 9s at a different store (Sportchek/Atmosphere in downtown Vancouver)

So tonight I made up my ridgeline, with a Knotbone at one end, and a Figure 9 hanging off a prusik at the other. Two more prusiks in the middle with mini carabiners (actually Nite Ize #2 S-biners, we'll see if they're strong enough, should be ok? since they're just holding the tarp in place, not loaded)

Looks like this:

Takes less than a minute to string up, sweet. That will be great when it's dark and raining.

Now I just have to get the tarp and hammock haha

I'll take some photos when I take it for a test drive next week

One thing that I've found lacking in many of the hammock reviews I've seen elsewhere is meaningful comparisons between different hammocks. It seems that in almost all cases, each hammock is reviewed in isolation, and compared only against tents.

So if anyone out there can provide any such comparison, even if it's incomplete in other regards, it would be a service to the community.

It seems to me (hammock noob) that a hammock would be a big advantage on wet, coast, rain forest trails, since your hammock never touches the ground and the amount of undergrowth makes it hard to find flat spots.

NiteIze rope holders vs. knots vs. pre made straps... (no replies)

I use mainly lengths of webbing at home, because I have a lot of it that is junk from years of climbing. When I am away from home, I usually have my vehicle, so I grab some tie down straps from the back to use, but when I am bicycling, or motorcycling, I haven't really figured out the best way to go yet.
I spotted those NiteIze rope holder things at Harbor Freight the other day, and they look pretty neat, I might like to try that out. Is there another brand of them too? I think I saw another brand mentioned somewhere. Plus I am a spend thrift, if I can save a few bucks, I try. Sometimes it turns into another example of penny wise, and pound foolish, but often I achieve the results I am looking for.

What's a quality and inexpensive line to use with them? I have some Paracord, but it's set to a length I use for clothesline when camping right now, though it's not hard to get more, it can be a bit pricey.
Thoughts, opinions?

Cheap tarp? (7 replies)

Yeah it's me again with more questions :D

Important note: this is for motorbike camping so ultra light weight is not an issue.
My wallet is kind of ultra light weight these days so price is an issue.

I'm pretty much settled on the hammock I want (WBBB 1.1 dbl) so now I need to pick a tarp.
The Warbonnet tarps are way out of my price range, so I'm looking at cheaper options like the Kelty Noah's 12
The hex style seem like a better shape but yeah, too $$ for me.

Although the 12 seems kind of huge. Maybe the Noah's 9 would be better, but I like how the 12 can be folded into a kind of door setup, can you do that with the 9? The extra "vestibule" space on the 12 would probably be handy since I live in the Pacific NW ie soggytown population me

Any other suggestions?
Especially if it's less than $80 and can be bought from a Canadian retailer
(shipping over the border SUCKS)

Are those... clothes pegs holding the "doors" closed?? I like it. Cheap and effective.
I've been hiking my whole life but never really cared much about gear, just bought whatever good brands were on clearance.

If I like the hammock on the bike trip, I'll probably pick up a 2nd lighter weight & smaller tarp for taking it backpacking.

Alright, I guess I'll kick things off :D

What's a fast way to set up a ridgeline for your tarp?

This method was described over at ADVRider by Law Dawg:

Quote
Law Dawg
BTW my single ridgeline is a piece of line (find some that works for you) and four Prusik knotts. The ends have two simple loop knots (it will not need to hold that much weight) for the two outside Prusiks. Run the ends around the trees and attach to the outside Prusiks with mini biners and snug up. Two more MBs for the tarp, adjust and snug up...pulling the two inside Prussiks tight in opposite directions.

Unfortunately I don't really have a clue what he's talking about haha.
OK I lied, I know that a biner is a carabiner and I assume an MB is a small carabiner

So uhh... this is a Prusik?

http://www.animatedknots.com/prusik/index.php
I'm not a big fan of heavy-handed moderation, so there's just a few simple rules to follow when posting on these forums:

Keep it work-friendly. Don't post anything that anyone is going to get in trouble for looking at in the office.

Be respectful of the moderators, each other, and keep discussions civil.

NO POLITICS. Sorry, but nothing good ever comes out of political infighting on forums (trust me, I run a lot of forums)

That's all for now - rules will be tweaked as the site grows in popularity.
Of course the mods reserve the right to close topics or delete/edit anything posted here, but we'll try to do it as little as possible.

If you want a user avatar, just set one up for your registered email address at http://en.gravatar.com/ and it will get used automatically.

This site currently doesn't allow image uploads, so please use an external image host like http://imgur.com/

Thanks for visiting and happy hammocking!
